One of the farming Wadsworths. Grandfathers farm was where Sorby Way is now. I can remember 'the rec' at the back of the club, the tennis courts at the back of the church.
There were 9 farms in Wickersley when I was young: Grandfathers,Dick Foers at the crossroads(my great uncle)the Tanyard farm, Pashleys and Bernard (bunny) Bakers at the crossroads and the top of Morthen road. Styrings on Church lane, Garners on Morthen Road, Aunt Mary Wadsworths which was on the end of Wood lane, Hinchcliffes (although it wasn't theirs then)and I almost forgot Moat farm on Moat Lane.
I had a brilliant childhood in Wickersley, we roamed the fields and woods making dens and playing football, rugby, cricket, going on bike rides. We helped at harvest times, I can remember the binders cutting the corn, everyone helping to 'stook' the sheaves, the threshing machine, making mangold worzel chips for the cows, milking the cows. It was a hard but enjoyable time and something I shall always remember.
Gill Owen nee Wadsworth
