Extract from Whites Directory, 1911

Wickersley is a parish and village in the liberty of Tickhill, union and county court district of Rotherham, Wickersley polling district, Rotherham division of Yorkshire rural deanery, archdeaconry of Sheffield and diocese of York.

There was a church here at a very early period. The later Early English Church which had a fine chancel with a lady chapel and one belonging to the lord of Wyckersley, although in excellent preservation, was taken down, with the exception of the tower, in 1834. The present church of St. Alban is a building of stone in the Gothic style consisting of a chancel, erected in 1886 at a cost of around £300, nave and an embattled tower containing 3 bells; the whole of the windows are stained, the reredos was erected in 1890 as a memorial to the late William Aldam, Esq., lord of the manor, who died in 1890. The register dates from the year 1540 and there is a complete list of rectors from 1240. The benifice is a rectory, net yearly value £355, with residence in the gift of Mrs. Freeman, and held since 1909 by the Rev. Charles Powell Morris B. A. of St. Johns College, Cambridge.

There is a Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1828 and a Primitive Methodist Chapel built in 1878.

The Wickersley Institute and club erected in 1862 by the late W. H. Yates M. D., at a cost of £1500 contains a library museum, lecture hall and house for the manager.

William Wright Warde-Aldam, Esq., of Frickley Hall, who is lord of the manor, W. H. Y. Titcomb., Esq., Sir George R. Sitwell, Bart, Capt. E. T. C. Bower of Broxholme, Scarborough, and the Rector are owners of the soil.

The population in 1901 was 703 and 953 in 1911, and the area is 1273 acres, rateable value, £2678.

The National School was built in 1855 at a coast of £750. The County Council School, mixed, was built in 1910 at a cost of £6000, for 400 children.

Rotherham is the nearest Railway Station.

Motor Omnibuses run on weekdays from Rotherham through Wickersley to Maltby and Dinnington.

Carriers pass through to Rotherham, Monday and Friday.
