Wickersley has long been noted fot its extensive quarries of fine gritstone, of which vast numbers of grindstones are formed for the Sheffield grinders, etc.
The Wickersley Institute and club erected in 1862 by the late W. H. Yates, M. D., at a cost of £1500 contains a library, museum, lecture hall and residence for the manager, with a view of promoting the diffusion of useful knowledge.
