Harold Westby was born in the March quarter of 1886 and lived in Sheffield. He married Mary Anne Williams in 1906 (known as Polly) . He worked as a little mester in the cutlery trade. He one of four children.

Harold’s father was John Westby born 1/1/1857 died 24/6/1903. He married Elizabeth Leybourn and also lived in Sheffield. He was a spring knife manufacturer and cutlery manager. He had 6 siblings one of whom was Joseph (born 1865) who has his own silver mark.

John Westby’s father William Westby born 6/12/1823 died 9/5/1895. Was born in Mansfield but becomes a cutlery manufacturer in Sheffield (41 Leicester Street) employing 80 men, 20 boys and 8 girls. William’s first wife was Mary Ann Pearson who died 17/6/1846. His second wife is Ann Watson 1823 -1910.William was one of 7 siblings.

William’s father was Lancelot Westby 1798 -1869 born in Wickersly but by 1861 is living in Sheffield. In 1816 he married Jane Gillings (1797- 1869) and is listed in the 1847 census as being a tailor. Lancelot had 4 siblings.

Lancelot’s father was Lancelot Westby born 20/9/1768 died in 1844 who was born in Braithwell, Yorkshire. He married Elizabeth Denton (1764-1839) in 1793 in Wickersley. He had 3 siblings.

Lancelot’s father was Francis Westby born 1742 died in 1824 also born in Braithwell, Yorkshire. He married Elizabeth Hammond (1747-1833 )in 1767 in Firbeck. Francis is also a tailor. The Lancelot name appears to come from his wife’s family. Francis appears to be an only child.

Francis’s father is Thomas Westby born in about 1720 in Braithwell, Yorkshire and probably died 29/7/1758. He married Mary Watson in 1740 again in Braithwell.

There is also a suggestion that Thomas owned land and voted but no connection can be made at this time to the Westby’s of Ravenfield , which is the right era and is geographically close.
