Waterhouse

The family of Waterhouse appear to have had several transactions with the Priory of Lewes. By leases of lands and churches under the Priory they obtained great wealth, and became persons of considerable weight and interest.

The church of St. Pancras was one of nine churches held by the Priory of Lewes. In May 1532 on the dissolution of the monasteries, Robert the Prior granted to Robert Waterhouse, of Halifax, his heirs and assigns, the right of advowson of this church, together with all manner of tythes of corn, grain, and hay, coming from all the lands, tenements, meadows, fields, closes and crofts, being and lying of and in all the towns, and townships, of Halifax,Skyrcote, Northowram, Sheff, Hyperom, Southowram, Ovynden, Brighouse, Fekysbye, Towithill, Sourby, Ayringden, Langfeld, Maskynhoyles, Soland, Risch- with, Norland, Borsland, Stanland, Eyland, Greteland, Conisbrough, Warmsworth, Butterbusk (Conisbrough), Firsby, Ravenfield, Woodlathes, Clifton, Crookhill, Braithwell, and Micklebring, with all their members and appurtenances within the county of York, or the rents paid, or to be paid, for the same tithes by the inhabitants of the said townships; and two tythe barns, called the tythe barns of Conisbrough and Braithwell, with one chamber, and a bakehouse under the same chamber, at the west end of their capital messuage in Braithwell aforesaid, near a house, called a dovecote, with half an acre of land, laying about the said barns and chamber, with free ingress and egress, with horses, oxen, and all manner of carriages to the said barns, chamber, and bakehouse, at all times of the year for the term of ninety-nine years, paying annually for the same, the sum of £58 6s. 8d. They also further engaged, that their successors should at the reasonable request of the heirs and assigns of the said Robert Waterhouse, grant a renewal of the said term of ninety-nine years, so often as the same shall expire, paying, therefore, a fine of 40s. and for the common seal 23s. 4d.
