Silvester/Sylvester

The Manor of Wickersley had passed into the hands of the Sylvester family of Ecclesfield, in the 18th century.

 

Ecclesfield

Edward Silvester was of High Green, Ecclesfield. He was married twice:

m1. ANNE SMYTHE 05 AUG 1593 Ecclesfield . No Children

m2. LUCY OXSPRINGE 29 JAN 1598 Ecclesfield . Children:

Edmund Silvester, age 28, m. Alice Abdie, age 26, of Whiston at Thrybergh in 1667

 

George Fox and his brother William Fox mortgaged Fullwood Hall to Nicholas Sylvester of Chapeltown, and on the 4th September 1707 John Sylvester of Birthwaite gentleman, executor of the last will and testament of Nicholas Sylvester, and George Fox of Fullwood Hall surrendered in the court of the Lord of the manor of Sheffield, Fullwood-hall, to John Fox of Sheffield-park.

In his will dated 1719, John Silvester, of Birthwaite, mentions Edward, son of late brother, Edward Silvester, of the Tower of London ; John Smith, son of my sister, Priscilla Smith ; William, eldest son of my brother, Thomas Silvester, of the Tower of London, deceased ; Thomas, youngest son of my brother Thomas ; my niece, Sarah Southorpe; Thomas and Hannah, younger children of my late brother Thomas ; my niece, Sarah Gilbert, eldest daughter of my brother Thomas; her husband, Thomas Gilbert ; my niece, Sarah Serjeantson.

Children of Thomas Silvester and Sarah (Nee Clay):

In his will dated 1710, Thomas (b.1661) leaves the manor of Mexborough and all Messuages, Lands, Tenements, and Hereditaments in the County of York to his wife and at her decease, to son Edward - his Heirs and Assigns.

Wickersley

Elizabeth Sylvester m. EDWARD Clark 12 JUN 1720 at Wickersley. Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward Sylvester (1679-1758) and Mary Kent m.22 Sept 1700.

Sheffield Archives hold details of a final concord dated 3 February 1703, between Thomas Silvester and John Sybury plaintiffs, and Mary Trippett, widow, Burrowes Trippett, Robert Wild, Sara his wife, Elizabeth Lee (daughter of Thomas Shirley?), widow, Gregory Bower and Elizabeth his wife, deforciants, of a messuage, 2 barns, a dovecote, 3 gardens, 2 orchards, 60 acres land, 30 acres meadow, 60 acres pasture and common pasture in Handsworth and Wickersley. Consideration £106. Ref: SY268/Z/1/1
