Cumbria Archives hold details of a Letter dated 28 September 1826, from Richard Scarborough of Wickersley to his cousin Thomas Scarborough at Low Lane, Ravenstonedale about being ill and containing family news. He refers to:
'the Heat of one of the Droughtiest Summers ever remembered in these parts... '
'... my late uncle Thomas Scarborough's son John Scarborough is a steady young Man, he is out of his apprenticeship as a working Goldsmith and is saving money fast...'
'... and Robert the son of Uncle Robert has married a great Fortune, and resides at Rugby in opulence and Credit.'
'... My sister Mary and her Husband are tolerable in Health and their only Son Charles is out of his time as a surgeon and apothecary and has past his London Examinations creditably and I understand promises fair to be an ornament to his profession...'
