Mrs. Barton, who was charged before the Rev. John Lowe with destroying her illegitimate offspring, upon her re-examination confessed she had been delivered of a still-born child, which, she said, she gave to Ann Robinson to bury in the church-yard at Wickersley. Ann Robinson stated that she was in bed with Barton, about 1 o'clock, on the morning after the latter had been delivered, when she (Barton) awoke her, and told her to make a hole at the back of the fire, and Barton afterwards took a substance wrapped in linen out of a dish that stood before her, and put it into the fire. She then, at Bartons request, fetched more coals, and put them on the fire. Betty Cavelle was soon after called in, and Barton told her she had burnt the body of the child. Mr. Lowe, in the absence of any evidence that the child had been born alive, committed Barton to the House of Correction for concealing the birth, and Ann Robinson for assisting in destroying the remains of the child.
