W.V.S.
The W.V.S. was formed in Wickersley in July, 1940. The Leaders were Mrs. W. Peet, Mrs. E. P. Jenkins and Mrs H. Lee. Treasurer, Miss J. Key (Mrs. S. Humble), Mrs. G. S. Hunt and Miss Wadsworth, Secretary, Mrs. G. W. Grooby. The activities of the members were many and varied. The Saving Groups move ment was inaugurated by the members who formed themselves into street group collectors. The whole village was canvassed for blood donors. The W.V.S. has helped with the distribution of ration and identity cards.

A canteen was run in 1940 - 41 in the Bawrry Road Chapel for the benefit of the Devon Regiment who were billeted in Wickersley.

A 'Make do and mend'‘ class was successfully run by Mrs. Coy.

The WVS. helped with the organising of the National Savings weeks and the Merchant Navy week.

With the help of the entertainments committee a large sum was raised for charity. A Red Cross sewing party was held each week. The Salvage drive was started by the members. The W.V.S. did a great service for their country by successfully billeting women and small children from the blitzed areas of London, also the boys from the Beckenham and Penge County School, as well as a number of private evacuees. Several members also joined the Home Guard Feeding Section in case of invasion, and went with the men to Sandbeck and cooked and fed them during a weekend camp.
