SPECIAL CONSTABULARY
The work of the Special Constabulary during the war was generally humdrum and to a greal extent unseen. The main purpose was prevention instead of detection and in this there was a considerable measure of success.
Complaints of lights being visible during raids came in all too frequently and the tracing of them took much time and endeavour and often in the end the result was disappointing. For example, many complaints were received from both The Brecks area and Listerdale of a light in the Dalton Magna area. Eventually it was found to be the lamp standing at the road junction there, which incidentally was masked to show only a cross, example of how far a very small light can be seen at night.
The section was soon considerably reduced by men going into the Forces or away on special work the following going for this reason :
D. Godley, K Godley, D. Green, J. Green, W. Lee, R, Stubbs, T. Thackeray, G. Tully, in addition A. Mobbs was transferred to another section.
The members at the conclusion of war were:
Section Leader: S. G. Moore. Special Constables: W. Coy,D. Downey, E. Lee, E. Stubbs, T. Shenton, E. Trickett and L. Wadsworth.
Appreciation should be given to reserve Section Leader Styring who until the end of the war continued to turn out whenever required.
Mention might be made of the work of the Wickersley Special Constabulary Savings Group which with Section Leader Moore as Hon. Sec. and Special Constable Coy as Hon. Treasurer has collected well over £2,000.
